Portable WiFi routers - known as MiFi routers in US - help create a personal WiFi hotspot
They work with mobile networks 2G / 3G and provide WiFi connectivity to multiple gadgets like WiFi enabled smart phones + tablet devices + netbooks / notebooks + similar gadgets, on the go and at office, home. on travel - all for a single data subscription
If your company provides smart phones and pays for data subscription to your employees, it is worth looking at my note - one pager from http://www.box.net/shared/9oa9xrxtqn - for initial as well as recurring cost savings. Please note that the prices mentioned in my note are for Indian scenario
If your company pays for multiple data subscriptions like BlackBerry services + internet connection at home + USB data card etc - it is possible to go in for a single data subscription and save costs
Also if the number of connections are more, your existing telecom operator / new operator like BSNL [multiple circles in India and even C towns] can provide aggressive data plan rates
My ex Wipro colleague, through his newly formed company HQ in Bangalore, sells the Portable WiFi / MiFi routers. He can also arrange to get data SIM cards from telecom operators if the requirement is for 100 or more connections [only for India registered companies - as they need to comply with Govt guidelines for getting new SIM cards]
If you would like to save on data subscription charges - please respond
